Pilates Mat

Teacher Training Level 1

PMEC Courses are a prerequisite to this course. 


During Pilates Instructor Training you will gain all of the skills necessary to instruct safe, effective, and creative classes. You will be able to teach group classes or private lessons to individuals of all levels. You will leave with an in-depth understanding of Pilates and learn a wide array of exercises. We will cover modifications to adapt to individuals who are pregnant or have injuries.


Taking your training at our beautiful Pilates studio provides you with unique advantages over other Pilates Instructor Trainees. Experienced high caliber instructors lead the training. All of our instructors hold Pilates certifications and years of teaching experience and most are were Physiotherapist Assistants, worked in clinical settings, or are Physiotherapists.


This comprehensive training will provide you with an exclusive jumpstart on your understanding of the human body.  We focus on a progressive leveled teaching technique to ensure you are able to adapt to a wide array of clients and situations. 


This course puts a strong emphasis on the musculoskeletal system to understand the purpose and benefits of each exercise. You will learn to use a wide range of cues, props, and hands-on techniques for your future clients. At the end of this course, you will leave with a well-rounded education to become a highly skilled and confident Pilates Mat Instructor.


Pilates Mat Level 1 Curriculum Outline:

  • Dive deeper into the history of Pilates

  • Essential principles and philosophy applied

  • Musculoskeletal system review

  • Guest Instructors, PTA’s and Physiotherapists sharing their expertise

  • Learn 82 Pilates mat exercises

  • Learn the original mat routine and modifications

  • Benefits and contraindications for each exercise

  • Modifications and variations for each of the 82 exercises

  • Use of small equipment

  • BACKS Cueing method

  • DCF Progressive Teaching Technique

  • Sequencing for group classes

  • Effective communication and cueing

  • Refining observation skills

  • Pre/postnatal Pilates

  • Introduction to special population considerations

  • Self-care

Out of Class Requirements

  • Minimum practice teaching time of 15 hours (unpaid work with your own chosen participants). This must include a signature from each attendee from each class. This can be done at any facility or private location and you must let them know that it is a practice only and that you are not yet certified.


  • Minimum 4 weeks (up to 8 weeks) unpaid co-teach program with us. Details can be provided upon request. Co-teach is recommended for all individuals looking to gain employment at Stretch Collective.

  • 30 hours Physical Review

  • 15 hours observation. 



To Successfully Complete the Program You Must Achieve the Following:

  • Complete all in-class activities

  • Participate in all teaching, classes, and lecture time

  • Complete all homework prior to receiving your certificate

  • Pass your final proficiency exam with 80% or higher

  • Pass your final practicum with 80% or higher

  • Complete either 10 classes (60-minutes) to participants of your choice OR Minimum 4-week unpaid co-teach program at SC.

  • Abide by our Pilates Code of Ethics


Maintaining Certification - Must Renew Every 3 years

  • Maintain the Dana Carter and/or Stretch Collective Code of Ethics

  • Teach safe and inclusive classes

  • I understand that any awarded certification from Dana Carter and/or Stretch Collective expires every 3 years and must be renewed in order to continue teaching and be eligible for insurance.

  • In order to re-certify, you must complete 80 hours of continuing education every three years consisting of a minimum 45 teaching hours and 35 Continuing Education hours. Your continuing education hours must be composed of:

    • ​​​​​​Minimum 15 contact hours (in person or LIVE Zoom with an approved instructor)
    • Up to 20 hours can be non-contact learning. Example Online (not-live courses), or other approved continuing education.

    • No more than 10 hours of non-contact learning may be self study (example books, and attending classes)

    • IMPORTANT - If you are certifying in any advanced Pilates Apparatus (Chair, Springboard, Ladderbarrel, and Cadillac) you must add another 2 hours of non-contact or contact learning for every additional apparatus. Max Required is an additional 8 contact or non-contact hours for comprehensively trained Pilates instructors.
